Position Overview: The Automation & Systems Technologist is responsible for maintaining and optimizing the greenhouse’s industrial automation, control systems, and IT infrastructure. This role ensures that all production, environmental, and business systems—including servers, ERP, accounting software, boilers, climate controls, irrigation controls, and PLC-based packaging equipment—operate reliably and efficiently. The technologist performs troubleshooting, systems integration, configuration, testing, and technical support across mechanical, electrical, IT, PLC, and automation environments. Responsibilities: Industrial Automation & Control Systems • Install, configure, test, and maintain automation systems including PLCs, HMIs, sensors, controllers, VFDs, and packaging equipment control systems. • Diagnose and troubleshoot issues in automated machinery, boilers, HVAC systems, irrigation systems, and greenhouse environmental controls. • Develop and modify PLC programs and HMI interfaces to improve operational efficiency and system performance. IT Infrastructure & Systems Integration • Maintain and administer servers, network equipment, switches, firewalls, and backup systems supporting operations. • Manage ERP systems, accounting software, production databases, and related user access. • Integrate IT systems with industrial automation controls to ensure seamless communication between production equipment and enterprise systems. System Commissioning & Technical Support • Commission new automation systems, equipment upgrades, and software integrations. • Prepare technical documentation including configuration files, network diagrams, and maintenance procedures. • Support users with IT, software, and automation system issues; provide training when required. Safety, Compliance & Continuous Improvement • Conduct preventive maintenance on automation, electrical, and control systems. • Ensure compliance with electrical safety, data security, and operational standards. • Identify weaknesses in systems and propose engineering improvements to reduce downtime and improve reliability. • Collaborate with supervisors, engineers, and contractors during installations and upgrades. Skills & Requirements • Strong knowledge of industrial automation systems, PLCs, HMIs, sensors, instrumentation, and building/environmental controls. • Solid understanding of server administration, networking, IT security, and system integration. • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, control logic, and network diagrams. • Knowledge of SQL databases, ERP systems, and industrial software tools. • Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills across IT, mechanical, and electrical domains. • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced production environment. Experience Requirements • Minimum 5 years of experience in automation, industrial controls, systems integration, or related technical fields. • Experience in greenhouse automation, manufacturing, food processing, or industrial facility operations is an asset. • Experience in PLC programming and HMI configuration required. • Prior experience in IT infrastructure, networking, server administration, or ERP systems strongly preferred.
